Strange object from space lands in Rock Falls, IL
Grand opening event on August 23, 2024
for the Rock Falls 2024-2025 RB&W District Sculpture Walk
Well, sort of…
FROM_ORION is made of stuff from space, like in the “we are all literally made from stardust” kind of way.
FROM_ORION is an award-winning marvel of design, a scientifically precise three-dimensional map of the Orion constellation that forces us to think outside of our self-centered perspective.
While its encoded message may not be immediately apparent from afar, as viewers approach and gaze upward, they are greeted with the revelation that this is a sky map, with each star location connected to form the constellation Orion as described by the ancient Greeks.
This sculpture is inspired by childhood memories of looking at the night sky with my father, learning about the Greek myths associated with each constellation and gazing with wonder at the majesty of the unimaginable distances and innumerable worlds before my eyes. My hope is to widen viewers' perspectives beyond our differences and connect through universal truths we share on our tiny planet.
… another journey …
NYC to Chicago to Cedar Rapids to Dubuque to Rock Falls and back
Rock Falls Illinois is a beautiful little town less than two hours from downtown Chicago.
Boasting serene river views and a footbridge overlooking the waterfalls, the Rock River separates Rock Falls from its sister city, Sterling Illinois. I am grateful for the opportunity to showcase my work in such a beautiful place and to be included among so many talented artists on display.
This time I made the journey solo, with the help of some heavy machinery and the friendly public works folks in Dubuque and Rock Falls. Proper planning and foresight made everything go smoothly with no major surprises. Hard physical work, but I enjoy the challenge, new experiences, and the support of a community that shares our passion for bringing art to public spaces.
FROM_ORION now shines brightly in Rock Falls until next August when a new, as yet determined, adventure awaits.
Stay curious, stay creative, and until our next artistic escapade. 🎨
